Your Machine Is Good. But Does the Plant Manager Care?
A few years back, I took part in a meeting with a machinery manufacturer; the brochure of that company was, from a technical point of view, impressive.
It included details about speed, accuracy, automation features, PLC architecture, cycle time and a long series of specifications.
The plant manager then asked a very simple question: "What happens when this machine stops?"
The room went quiet.
Does this ring a bell? Whenever we talk about what a machine is capable of, do we ever explain what it means to the person who is responsible for keeping production going? Whenever our marketing addresses the engineer's specification sheet, isn't the plant manager instead concerned with tomorrow morning's production target?
I am certain that many of us have witnessed this occurring.
The real problem behind making a plant manager care
The issue is that the value you offer is usually stated in the language of the manufacturer rather than that of the plant.
When a plant manager considers things, he thinks about output, bottlenecks, maintenance calls, safety, quality and whether the production plan will be achieved.
That distinction is crucial.
Research carried out by Gartner indicates that B2B buyers are becoming more inclined to carry out their own independent digital research; by 2026, 67% of them had stated that they prefer a buying experience which does not involve salespeople. At the same time, however, 69% said that they consult sales representatives to confirm the AI-generated insights. The significance of this is that buyers want information that helps them make a decision, not a digital copy of your brochure.
Then here's how you get a plant manager to care.
How to make a plant manager care about your product
My answer is straightforward: convert machine capability into practical results.
I am calling this the “Day-in-the-Plant Test”.
Before drafting a headline, a brochure page or a sales presentation, we should ask ourselves: What is this person attempting to protect each day?
For a plant manager, the conversation might look like this:
Rather than saying: "Our machine provides high-speed automated operation."
State that the throughput can be increased without the need for an additional production shift.
The machine is the one mentioned in the first statement.
The second one portrays the plant manager's world.
When it comes to maintenance, 'easy access to critical components' is a feature, while 'reducing the time that your maintenance team spends diagnosing and accessing the machine' is an operational outcome.
The term "advanced scrap monitoring" is technical jargon, and the statement "identify quality losses before they turn into a problem for a full production run" relates to a daily concern.
What I'm talking about is not increasing the size of claims but giving them relevance.
A survey carried out by Deloitte in 2025 of 600 manufacturing executives showed that maintenance is still one of the areas in which manufacturers observe a substantial gap between their present and desired level of maturity. The same study also revealed that the manufacturers who took part in it were reporting tangible benefits from their investments in smart manufacturing, such as an improvement in production output of up to 20% and a 15% increase in unlocked capacity.
Those figures are not actually concerned with technology; they are concerned with operational performance.
That is the direction in which machinery marketing should proceed.
Exactly what is the plant manager purchasing?
He is not merely purchasing a machine; he is acquiring fewer unpleasant surprises.
Consider the buying committee.
The production manager could be concerned with throughput, the maintenance supervisor with accessibility and reliability, the quality manager with consistency and scrap, the EHS team with safety, procurement with commercial risk, and the owner with return on capital.
Same machine. Different stakes.
According to Gartner, contemporary B2B buying can be viewed as a series of recurring buying tasks — these involving problem identification, solution exploration, requirements building, supplier selection, validation and the creation of consensus. The company's research also shows that B2B buyers are 1.8 times more likely to conclude a high-quality deal when they use digital tools in conjunction with a sales representative as opposed to using the digital tools on their own.
That shows us an important point.
Your marketing should go beyond simply explaining the machine; it should help the various people who are part of the buying group understand why the machine is important to their job.
Firms that are technically strong may still end up falling behind.
The product could well be good, the brochure could be accurate and the salesperson could know the technology well.
However, the technology has not been translated into the buyer's daily reality.
According to McKinsey's 2024 B2B Pulse study, which was based on nearly 4,000 decision-makers from 34 sectors and eight major industries, about one-third of buyers at any stage of the buying process prefer face-to-face interaction, one-third prefer remote communication and one-third prefer digital self-service.
The message isn't to "go digital".
The lesson is that each point of contact should be useful.
Any plant manager who looks into your machine should be able to find evidence relating to uptime, maintenance, changeover, safety, output and support. The salesperson should also be capable of talking about these same points in the plant, and the technical presentation should support them rather than opening a new line of discussion.
Consistency builds confidence.
What happens on the ground?
Now picture yourself getting ready for the next product launch or sales presentation.
Start with the machine.
Begin with the person.
List three or four operational problems for which the person is being assessed, and then link each major feature to a consequence that is important in relation to those problems.
Think about it: would a plant manager still be able to identify this as a problem from his or her own experience if the name and logo of the product were taken away?
If the answer is no, then the message is probably in need of work.
In my opinion, this is one of the simplest methods of making machinery marketing more commercially useful. You don't need more adjectives, you need better translation.
Maybe that is actually the true purpose of marketing in the area of industrial machinery: not to make the machine seem impressive, but to ensure that its value cannot be misunderstood.
In conclusion,
What you should do is highlight the operational consequences, not the technical capabilities.
Construct messages based on the daily responsibilities of each role within the buying group.
Each point of contact in the areas of marketing and sales should help the customer to understand, justify or validate their decision.
The machine could be ingeniously designed.
The market can only assign a value to things it understands.
As Theodore Levitt famously put it, “People don't want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole.”
